The Prophet

The Prophet is the kind of place you tell all your friends about.  For $40 you get everything seen below (except for the Turkish delight).  Just don't eat too much pita bread .. by the time the kebabs hit the table you are already one bite away from a food coma.  We had a lovely night celebrating my bf's mama's birthday.  Cheap and cheerful dinner complimented by a bottle of French celebratory champagne.

Blanche Dubois

Blanche Dubois are sisters Nadija and Adriana Begovich.  I remember Adri lulling about in high school dreaming about Jeff Buckley, her finger twisting her hair, guitar in reach.  We used to draw sunflowers whilst wearing corduroys talking about boys with long hair.  I always knew she would be famous.  It was her Chuck Taylors. We were all pretty chuffed to be starring in their latest video clip.  Who doesn't want to get airbrushed by Hendra, drink ciders and eat pizza on a Saturday whilst jumping around with your friends.  So much fun and now I know all the words to a song other than Baby Got Back.

Mrs S

La buche d'affinois is a triple cream delight.  This French beauty has a melty velvety centre and when served with mixed mushrooms studded with macadamia nuts it's pure heaven.  All perched atop a crispy edged polenta and spinach this has to be one of my favourite breakfasts in a long time. Thank you Mrs S, you are pretty spesh! 20120617-172430.jpg

The Precinct

You had me at "try the brown ale paired with lamb sliders". It is always reassuring when the wait staff know way more than you. So already my first impression of The Precinct was a big thumbs up. I love the layout of The Precinct. Warm and welcoming making you want to bring a hungry bunch and huddle around the round table sharing copious bottles of wines. The staff are just ace. They know the menu and are pretty good at reading people. Once word gets out this place will be packed all the time. Nice to venture a little east of the city for a change. This place is perfect at both ends of the spectrum. From lazy eats with one or two to a special birthday with an armful of friends.

The charcuterie board was a great selection of offerings. I love picky food where you sample bits and pieces. It's like looking into the chefs mind to see what he is a little obsessed with at the moment. The rabbit really stood out, it's richness perfectly matched with tart little cornichons and the sweet toasted fruit bread. Chicken liver parfait was silky and rich. Our sticky turkey wings were a nice surprise. Typical of turkey the meat was a little dry but the texture almost vanished when wrapped in that crisp caramelised skin.

I love that junk food has been reincarnated into dude food sporting seasonal produce. Out with overpriced "tapas" in with tummy filling dude food. The little lamb sliders (on three different buns) were like gnawing on crispy lamb chops straight off the barbeque. Nom nom.

Everyone had been raving about the gnocchi so it was on the top of my hit list. I really loved the marriage flavours but I am deinitely a fluffy pillow kind of girl. My bf said I was just being fussy and he thought the density of the gnocchi balanced out the light creamy sauce. I still ate my fair share of the plate though!

We ended on a sweet note with decadent chocolate truffles and a little ten year old french drop "mas amiel cuvee" walking away full, happy and only $150 down.

Pretty damn good The Precinct. See you again on Thursday!

Smoult's Continental Deli

I am really digging Maylands these days.  Smoult's Continental Deli is just what the strip needed.  I was on the hunt for a gourmet birthday present and walked away with the Grocer's black salt, Sicilian salt (just like the shakers at Cantina), chilli & lime jam, chicken liver parfait and a cheese board which almost didn't leave my kitchen.  I also left laden with two of the scrummiest hot dogs I have had for a long time.  The white rolls fluffy and almost a bit chewy, the sausages juicy oozing with flavour and the jalepenos and sauerkraut added kick.   See ya later Bunnings ... I have found a new Sunday snag. 20120618-223158.jpg

Mad Mex

This was my first trip to Mad Mex.  I found it quite messy in every aspect.  Reminiscent of an American high school in the 80s with a lunch lady just slopping any old thing onto the tray.  The burrito was lacking.  Something to grab after a boozy night out with friends but definitely not somewhere to take a friend for good grub. 20120624-212949.jpg

Snags & Sons

A wet winter's night called for a trip Snags & Sons with my fab friends Jessica Shaver and Pia Poynton.  Fresh from a Nøgne Ø tasting at the International Beer Shop the girls had plenty to share including a lovely bottle of Brooklyn Sorachi Ace.  It tasted of distant balmy summer nights.  The perfect match to my Toulouse Sausage crammed with creamy brie and caramelised onions.  Sausage loving, beer drinking and plotting to take over the world ... perfect. 20120605-220123.jpg

Grill'd

Burgers with babes. We thought we would make use of our Roving Dinner vouchers to guts on grilled delights. My bf thinks the Summer Sunset burger should only be consumed in the wake of a drinking expedition. I disagree. Bacon and pineapple, salty and sweet; this marriage makes me happy.

Bellies (almost) full we took a pit stop at 50ml before Luna Cinemas to pick up cupcakes and chai for movie consumption.  Trishna, an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, was destined to finish on a tragic and teary note.  Sob.
